Ideas & Research

My overarching project is to design and introduce experiments in the governance of human collaboration that catalyze ingenuity to face the 21st century effectively and humanely. In my first decade in business schools, I focused my research on building frameworks to support the success of managers and organizations committed to responsible strategy in light of a wide range of pressing and complex global concerns. I am pivoting my theoretical gaze towards the institutions of governance, inspired by Lon Fuller’s conception of eunomics as “the science, theory or study of good order and workable arrangements,” and Phillipa Foot’s vision of natural goodness at the foundation of norms.

Responsible Strategy

Strategy is about where you want to go and how best to get there. Responsible strategy starts from your sense of purpose and caring about how your strategy impacts others and the planet.

Global Governance

We are in a post-national world where the rules of the game emerge from a patchwork of legal regimes and international norm-setting organizations. How do the pieces fit together? How should they fit together to create spaces that promote cooperation–within and across national boundaries?

Professional Ethics

Professional ethics takes stock of the rights and responsibilities of your professional role–not only as they are but as they should be. Consequently, professional ethics involves a political theory of how your profession fits into the whole of society and its forms of governance.

Influences

Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhi says his life is his message and that his life represents the story of his experiments with truth. With his life and his words, Gandhi inspired me to find ways to harmonize theory and practice through my own life’s experiments.

To believe that what has not occurred in history will not occur at all is to argue disbelief in the dignity of man.

Karl Marx

Karl Marx showed me how to decode prevailing ideas to understand their ideological forms and how to critique these ideas “immanently” by leaning on their own premises to unravel their logics and thereby disclose hidden potential for transformative change.

In the analysis of economic forms neither microscopes nor chemical reagents are of assistance. The power of abstraction must replace both.

Bob Marley

Coming from the Caribbean and speaking out against the vestiges of European empire and the emerging empire of global capital, Bob Marley resonated with my roots in Puerto Rico and Cuba and moves me with his uncompromising commitment to freedom and critiques of power.
